How to Clean Silk Plants With Aerosol Hairspray
Silk plants are the perfect alternative to live plants as they eliminate the need to water and care for live plants while also giving an everlasting eye appeal that will not die off like live plants would. Several retail cleaning products are designed to clean silk plants, and while most times these do work, they are usually at a price point higher than you might be willing to pay. Cleaning the plants is an easy task to accomplish, and aerosol hairspray is one of the key elements in the cleaning process. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use a feather duster to clean plants regularly, which will usually be all that is required to keep plants clean. Also dust as a first step of the cleaning process to remove any loose dirt or buildup from the plants.
-
2
Use a hair dryer to blow away built-up dust that is not easily removed. Turn the dryer on low heat, and blow over the leaves to loosen and remove as much dust as possible.
-
-
3
Wipe down plant leaves with a damp cloth to remove any remaining residue. This will restore the plants to nearly original condition, making them ready for the hairspray application.
-
4
Spray the leaves of the silk plant with any brand of aerosol hairspray. (Cheap brands work just as well as brand name hairsprays.) This will blow away any remaining dust while also covering the plant leaves with the shiny look they come with when first purchased. Spray the leaves with just a light coating of the hairspray because over-applying and re-applying over time will create a layer of hairspray buildup on the plant leaves.

The hairspray will preserve the leaves and prevent dust buildup, but over time will create a buildup. When leaves have an unattractive film, wipe them down with a damp cloth and re-apply the hairspray to the leaves once more.

I strongly disagree with using hairspray to clean any artificial flowers, silk or not. Hairspray will actually attract dust and the build up will discolor the plants. Silk plant cleaners are specifically formulated to clean silks without damaging them, but if you can't afford a silk plant cleaner, rinsing in plain water beats using hairspray anytime. (IMHO)
