Looking to start a small business in New York City? There are a few items, such as getting a license, that you need to keep in mind when doing so. Because there are different types of businesses, there are also different types of licenses. Depending on the type of business that you are planning on opening, the city of New York may require you to fill out different forms.

      Collect all necessary paperwork and information regarding your business, such as your business's tax information, federal employer identification number and any additional trade licensures.

      Review the list of businesses listed on the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) website at www.nyc.gov/html/dca/html/licenses/licenses.shtml, and choose the type of business you are applying for from the list.

      Use the online application to fill out all necessary items (as according to the website and application for that particular trade) online. If your type of business is not listed on the DCA's list of businesses that can apply online, you will need to pick up and submit the license application in person at the DCA Licensing Center, which is located at 42 Broadway on the 5th floor.

Tips & Warnings

  • If all of the application materials are complete, then the application will be processed as soon as it is received by the DCA office.
