How to Use Spell Check on a Mac
Every Mac comes with free applications already installed that you can use to type and then check your spelling, including the TextEdit word processor, the Mail email application and the Safari Web browser.

Launch an application that you can write with -- for example, click “TextEdit” in the Dock to launch Apple’s native word-processing application. A blank text document opens. You could also launch Mail, then click “New Message,” or launch Safari and open a page where you type text, such as a user forum where you post.

Type your text in the document or message.

Click “Edit” from the application menu, then click “Spelling and Grammar.” Click “Show Spelling and Grammar” from the pop-up menu. The spell-check window appears.

Click “Spelling and Grammar,” then click “Check Document Now" to start spell-checking the document. The spelling checker highlights the first word that is misspelled by underlining it in red, if it detects any misspellings. If the spelling checker finds a suggestion for a misspelled word in the dictionary, the word appears in the middle of the spell-check window.

Click “Change” to use the suggested replacement word, click “Ignore” to ignore the word or click “Learn” to add the highlighted word to the dictionary. Click “Define” to see a definition of the suggested word. Retype the word if the spelling checker does not provide a correct alternative, then click “Change.” Click “Find Next” to go to the next misspelled word.

Click “Edit” from the application menu, click “Spelling and Grammar,” then click the “Check Spelling While Typing” option if you want to see misspelled words highlighted as you type them. Click “Check Grammar with Spelling” if you want to check your grammar with your spelling. Click “Correct Spelling Automatically” if you want the spell-check feature to fix a misspelled word as soon as you type it.
