Instructions

    • 1

Find an inexpensive back pack (or a suitcase on wheels is even better) for each member of your family. Yard sales and thrift shops offer great, cheap deals.

    • 2

Assemble enough items for your survival kit to last for 72 hours, keeping in mind that an emergency is not a 3-day vacation.

    • 3

Purchase the basic necessities as far as food goes. Three days of light meals and snacks, as well as three days worth of water is recommended. Do not forget the reusuable eating utensils, cup, and plate.

    • 4

Pack one set of clothes in a water-tight bag. Include a wind breaker or jacket, gloves and a hat that covers the ears. A warm space blanket is highly recommended as well.

    • 5

Print copies of your birth certificate, marriage license, will, insurance policies, address book, phone numbers and credit card information. Put them in a plastic Ziploc bag. You will also want to add paper and pen, a few envelopes, postage stamps, scriptures, and assorted games for young ones.

    • 6

Buy a small Rubbermaid container for your personal toiletries. Soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, feminine needs, and toilet paper will probably make your checklist of must-haves.

    • 7

Be sure not to forget the easily forgotten essentials. A flashlight and batteries, matches or lighter, utility knife and cutting stone, duct tape, change for a cell phone (cell phone batteries don't stay charged very long), a first aid booklet, small first aid kit, and prescription medications.
