Step 1
Plan first. Depending on where you live, will determine what type of butterflies will frequent your garden. You will want to plant flowers and plants that butterflies from your area will be attracted to. You can do some leg work and find out what butterflies are native to your particular part of the country.

Step 2
Choose an area where your garden will be sure to get plenty of sunshine. Decide on what size you want it to be and what flowers and nectars will attract butterflies to your garden. You may want to make a rough sketch of your garden on paper.

Step 3
Begin Planting. Select the best plants and flowers that will go in your garden. You may want to incorporate rocks throughout the garden as butterflies like to nest on them. Be sure to make sure that the soil is rich and natural.

Step 4
Maintain your butterfly garden. You maintain your butterfly garden just as you would any other garden. Water the plants, make sure they get plenty of sunshine, and make sure there are not objects or things that will harm any butterflies or caterpillars.
