Tips & Warnings
Other Alternatives:
Avoid caffeine and carbonated beverages, as these can be triggers for heartburn in some people. Instead, drink more water to aid in the digestion of foods.
Eat smaller meals at a slower pace. Slowing down when you eat and consuming less food will aid in the digestion process allowing the acid to stay in the stomach to break down the food.
Never lie down while eating and always wait two to three hours after a meal before going to bed.
Elevate your head to allow a proper flow of digestion. Laying flat may hinder the digestion process.
Stop smoking. The health risks of smoking are countless and in relations to heartburn, smoking encourages the production of acid in the stomach. With nothing for the stomach to digest, the acid can escape up the esophagus.
Weight gain can contribute to heartburn because the extra weight causes pressure which leads to the backup of stomach acid into the esophagus. Walk at least one hour after dinner to aid in weight loss, circulation, and digestion.
