How to Wire a Car Stereo in a House
Car stereos are meant to be in your car, but what if you want to install one in your house? After all, car stereos have lots of options that some home audio systems just don't have. It takes some special equipment to get the car stereo to work, but if you have the right parts, this job can be done in under an hour. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- DC power supply
- Wire strippers
- Wire cutters
- Wire crimpers
- Blue butt connectors
- Speaker wire
- Home stereo speakers

Lay out the DC power supply and the car stereo on a table close to a wall outlet. Locate the red and yellow wires that come off of the harness in the back of the car stereo. Strip 1 inch of shielding from those two wires. Twist the wires together to form one lead. Strip the black wire.

Locate the speaker wires on the harness of the car stereo. These are color coded and paired, and also labeled. Strip the ends of these wires and crimp blue butt connectors on the ends.

Cut two sections of speaker wire to the length you need to reach the speakers from the stereo. Strip half an inch off the end of the speaker wires and crimp them to the corresponding leads from the car stereo.

Strip half an inch from the other end of the speaker wires and plug them into the back of the speakers.

Twist the red knob on the power supply and slide the red and yellow wires from the car stereo through the hole behind the red knob. Tighten down the red knob, securing the wire to the power supply. Repeat with the black wire and the black knob on the power supply.

Plug the power supply into the wall. The stereo should power up, and the speakers should turn on once sound starts playing. If they don't, make sure your connections are tight.
