How to Change a Chevy Fuel Filter

You should change your Chevrolet's fuel filter every 30,000 miles, or every two years, whichever comes first. In most Chevys, the fuel filter is mounted outside the fuel tank, so you won't have to worry about disconnecting the tank like you do with other vehicles. Use extreme caution when working on the fuel system; make sure there is no pressure built up in the system before you begin. Place shop towels around the fuel line fittings to help absorb any residual fuel that may come out when you disconnect the fittings.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the gas cap on your Chevy. Locate and remove the fuel pump relay from the fuse box. Turn your ignition key to start the engine, and let the vehicle run until it stalls. Then crank it for an additional 5 to 10 seconds. This will de-pressurize the fuel system.

    • 2

Open the hood and disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

    • 3

Use the jack to raise the Chevy on its rear end near the fuel tank. Lower the vehicle onto jack stands to give it more support.

    • 4

Locate the fuel filter; it's mounted to one of the fuel rails near the tank.

    • 5

Clean away all dirt and other contaminants that are near the line fittings to the filter. Blow it away with compressed air, or wipe it away with carburetor cleaner.

    • 6

Loosen and disconnect the screw-in fittings to the filter lines. On each fitting, grip the hex at the fitting with an open-ended wrench while unscrewing the nut with a flare-nut wrench to disconnect each line.

    • 7

Remove the carriage bolts that mount the filter's bracket, then remove the filter from the bracket.

    • 8

Insert the replacement filter into either the old mounting bracket or a new one. Mount the filter in place using the mounting bracket and the carriage bolts.

    • 9

Connect the fuel lines onto the filter, using the nut fasteners with the two different wrenches.

    • 10

Lower the vehicle, return the gas cap, and reconnect the battery cable and the fuel pump relay. Turn the ignition key to the "Start" position for two seconds to re-pressurize the fuel system.
