How to Help a Fetus Gain Weight

As a pregnant mother, you do not want to face the possibility of your fetus not gaining weight properly. Since we cannot control everything, it makes sense to focus on the factors that we can influence, such as maternal diet, lifestyle, and relaxation. Making small and sometimes big changes to your diet and habits can have a big effect on the baby, resulting in a healthier outcome for both of you.

  • Eat plenty of protein, carbohydrates, and fresh foods from the earth. A diet balanced in various nutrients coupled with gradual, consistent weight gain keeps both you and your baby healthy. Include foods such as eggs, meats, vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, nuts, legumes, and dairy products to eat a diet rich in many nutrients.

  • Eat to satisfy hunger and thirst. Each mother will need to eat a different amount of calories to nurture her body and her baby during pregnancy. Eat foods that you enjoy that give you energy and help digestion while drinking plenty of water.

  • Do not try to lose weight or restrict your weight. Pregnancy is generally not a time to lose weight. If you are eating a nutritious diet and exercising, weight gain is not a concern. Everything you eat goes to the fetus and this is the same for the times you do not eat. Your baby needs to eat regularly.

  • Consult a health care professional to discuss supplements. If you find it difficult to eat enough you may benefit from a balanced nutritional supplement.

  • Quit smoking. Low fetal weight is associated with smoking in any amount and can result in additional complications. Consult with someone who has quit or can support you while quitting. Support yourself with positive statements or affirmations and a healthy reward for taking care of yourself and your baby.

  • Spend time relaxing everyday. The time you spend resting is valuable for replenishing your body and baby. Stress can cause you to feel like you are not hungry so counter it with activities or down time that brings you back to balance. Some ideas you may enjoy are laying down while listening to soft music, meditation, knitting, sewing, a warm bath, or a quiet walk outside.

  • Choose an exercise you like and incorporate it into everyday life. Gentle exercise contributes to a sense of well being that can assist you in eating well and making other healthy lifestyle choices. You are also training for the marathon of labor. Make the most of housekeeping and vacuum with vigor, dance with some music, jog or walk briskly with the dog, take the stairs, or try a new exercise like yoga, tai chi or pilates.
