How to Build a Homemade Pitching Mound

Baseball was invented by Alexander Cartwright in 1845. The first recorded game of baseball took place on June 19, 1846. Thanks to Cartwright we are able to enjoy this great pastime today. And as with any sport, practice makes perfect. If you wish to practice your pitching style, follow these simple steps to build your own pitching mound.

Things You'll Need

  • 100 lbs of fill dirt
  • Tape measure
  • Shovel
  • Pitching rubber
  • 7 nails, four inches long
  • Hammer
  • Rubber home plate

    • 1

      Pour 100 lbs of fill dirt in the location you wish to build your pitching mound. Stomp down and flatten with your shovel until the circular mound--formed like a small hill--is five feet in diameter and 10 ½ inches high in the middle.

      Purchase a pitching rubber and home plate from a sporting goods store.

      Nail the pitching rubber into the center of the mound, using two nails.

      Measure 60 feet, 6 inches from the front edge of the pitching strip. Place the front of your rubber home plate here.

      Nail the home plate into the ground using the remaining five nails.

  • Be careful when using hammer and nails.
