How to Create Ribbon Wands

Many children, both boys and girls, love pretending to have magical powers as part of their games. To help their imaginations thrive, add the prop of a ribbon wand so that they can direct their "powers" more easily. Kids can certainly help with this project by picking out ribbons and paint colors and painting their own wand handles.

Things You'll Need

  • 12-inch dowel rod, 1/4-inch thick
  • Several colors acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Several colors and patterns satin ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Craft wire
  • Curling iron

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the dowel rod with the acrylic paint. Use different colors to create a geometric pattern, vines and flowers, stars or anything else you'd like. Allow the rod to dry for at least 30 minutes.

    • 2

Cut about 12 six-inch strips of ribbon. These ribbons will remain straight. For curly ribbons, cut 12 to 16 (keep the numbers even) 10-inch strips of ribbon. Curling the ribbon will make them slightly shorter.

    • 3

Let your curling iron heat slightly. Carefully, clasp ribbons at the top of the curling iron and wrap them down the rod. Leave them on the iron for no more than 15 seconds. Unclasp each ribbon and pull it straight up off the curling iron. Lay the curled ribbons aside to cool.

    • 4

Divide the ribbons into four groups, putting equal numbers of straight and curled ribbons in each. Tie the ends of each group together with craft wire. Cut a strip of ribbon about 12 inches long.

    • 5

Spread glue over the top inch of the dowel rod. Stick the bundles into the glue around the tip of the dowel rod. Holding the bundles in place with one hand, use the other to wrap the long ribbon tightly around the bundles, binding them to the dowel rod and hiding the craft wire. Fasten the ribbon in place with a drop of glue at the end.
