How to Trim an Amaryllis

Amaryllis bulbs are hardy plants that grow straight green stalks and trumpet-shaped colorful flowers. They add height and diversity to any indoor or outdoor garden and are relatively low maintenance. Outdoor amaryllis plants require some special care after they bloom to ensure they bloom brilliantly again in the spring. Trimming them back properly takes nothing more than good timing. Instructions

    • 1

Trim back your amaryllis plants late in the growing season. Watch for the blooms to fade; they will get brown and wrinkly and begin to shrivel. They are ready to be trimmed when they are completely brown.

    • 2

Cut the blooms right under the flowers so that you have a clear view of the stems. Snip the stems down to two inches above the ground. Compost both the blooms and the stems if desired.

    • 3

Push the leaves down gently around the base of the plant. Try not to break them. The leaves will die back and provide mulch for the plants during the winter. In the spring, the snipped stems will grow into new blooms.
