How to Find a Police Station

In the U.S., nearly every municipality or district has its own local police station. You may need a police station for several reasons. For example, if you need to file a police report for stolen goods, many municipalities require that you go to the police station. A restraining order also requires that you physically go to a police station. If you do not know where the nearest police station is, there are several ways you can find one.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the Internet. You can also use Google Maps by choosing directions and typing in your address for the starting point. For the ending point, type "police station" and Google Maps will show you every police station within reasonable mileage of your home. It will also give you directions to the police station that you choose

Use your local telephone directory. Under "Police Department," there will be a listing for non-emergency numbers of your local police station. If you are not sure which one is closest to you, call one of them and ask the desk officer. Once you have found the nearest police station, you can call the non-emergency number for that police station and get directions to it.

Ask a police officer. If you see a police officer out on the street and he is not busy, he should not have a problem telling you where the nearest police station is located. He will also probably be able to give you directions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not call 911 for the location of the nearest police station unless you have an emergency. It does not handle non-emergency questions.
