How to Secure a Pergola
Pergolas make a beautiful addition to your back yard or patio. They provide an aesthetically pleasing aspect to the landscaping as well as shade and privacy on hot summer days. Whether you built your pergola from scratch or assembled it from a kit, one of the most important tasks is to ensure your pergola is secured correctly. Properly securing a pergola prevents it from tipping over and creating a safety hazard. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Metal U brackets
- Anchor bolts
- Lag bolts
- Wrench
- Screwdriver or drill bit
- Drill

Measure the distance between each of the pergola poles.

Use a pencil to measure and mark the measured distances for the pergola poles onto the deck or patio.

Drill holes in the patio or deck in the locations marked with the pencil.

Place one metal U bracket on top of each of the drilled holes so they are standing in a "U" position. Insert an anchor bolt through the bracket into the patio or deck flooring and use a screwdriver or drill bit to tighten the screws.

Place a lag bolt nut on top of each anchor bolt and use a wrench to tighten securely.

Insert one pole of the pergola into each of the U brackets.

Drill two holes on either side of each pergola pole and then insert anchor bolts into each of the four holes. Top each anchor bolt with a lag bolt nut and secure tightly with a wrench.

Repeat until all four poles of the pergola are secure.

Tips & Warnings
To secure pergolas into dirt, simply dig 30-inch-deep holes with a hole digger, fill with concrete and allow to dry. Install the metal U brackets on top of the concrete as described above.
