Plant the mandevilla in a pot with good drainage if you live in area where the temperature drops below 50 degrees F. Use an equal mixture of potting soil, peat moss and sand to form a semi-porous soil mixture for the plant.

Trellis the mandevilla vine to give it support. This will also show the flowers in at their most attractive against the green foliage background.

3
Place the potted plant outside in bright sunlight for the summer. Water the plant thoroughly, allowing it to dry completely between waterings. Fertilize every two weeks while outside with a phosphorus-rich fertilizer. Pinch off any dead flowers to promote new growth.

4
Bring the pot inside for the winter before the first frost. Before entering the house, check thoroughly for pests under the leaves and flowers. Also prune off any diseased or dead leaves at this time. Place the pot in a light area that is above 50 degrees F, and water only when dry.

5
Prune the plant in early spring before moving it back outside by removing and shortening old stems. The mandevilla responds well to heavy pruning. Even if it is cut almost to the ground, it will sprout flowers off of new shoots within the growing season.
