How to Control Two WOW Characters at Once

The practice of controlling two or more characters simultaneously in the World of Warcraft (WoW) video game is referred to as "multiboxing." This practice is allowed under the WoW End-User License Agreement provided that all actions taken by each character are initiated by the user -- no automation is permitted. We'll be reviewing the simplest way to accomplish multiboxing using one computer and a single-game installation.

Review your subscription configuration. Ensure your characters are on individual accounts. If the characters you'd like to play together share an account you must purchase a new copy of the game and pay to have one character transferred to a new account. Upgrade each account with the same expansion packs if you intend to play your characters beyond the content available in the standard WoW subscription.

Familiarize yourself with the current incarnation of Warcraft's End-User License Agreement and Terms of Service. Actively keep yourself informed of changes to either to be certain you're not violating any gameplay restrictions.

    • 3

Install a key broadcasting software. Popular options for PC include AutoHotKey and PwnBoxer, while Clonekeys is a good option for Mac users. Be sure that the software you choose is functional for single-PC solutions and not limited to broadcasting keystrokes across multiple machines.

Install a mouse broadcasting software such as Mousecloner, which is designed specifically to adhere to WoW's Terms of Service. It is highly recommended that you confirm the software you decide on actually displays a cursor in all game instances and allows for dynamic switching of control between each of those instances.

Find or write your own macros in a way that makes the best use of each character's abilities. Keep in mind that each key command is echoed to every active game instance, and ensure that your macros and hotkeys are assigned in a logical manner that maximizes synergy between the character classes you're playing.

Install a set of multiboxing friendly in-game add-ons. Begin with an action bar management add-on that offers key binding functionality. Add-ons that provide for synchronized merchant interaction, buff and debuff monitoring, quest acceptance and more are also available and greatly enhance the experience.

Spend time familiarizing yourself with your setup and how each character responds to your input. Put particular emphasis on character location and movement. Eliminate any discrepancy in response time and action assignments.

Tips & Warnings

  • Running multiple instances of World of Warcraft on one PC can strain your system resources. A multi-core processor and at least 2 GB RAM is recommended. Turning graphic options to their lowest setting can improve performance.

  • There are many "suites" or compilations of tools for multiboxers that include both key and mouse broadcasting features, and add-ons that offer numerous features designed with the multiboxer in mind.

  • Avoid any program or add-on that includes genuine character automation. Automation of character activity violates the game's service agreement and can result in your account being terminated. It is okay for multiple characters to respond to a single input command, and this is sometimes called automation by software authors.
