How to Make Origami Paper Toys
Origami is the ancient art of paper folding. Paper is folded into different shapes that resemble real-life objects. Although most people believe that origami is just folding, traditional origami also uses cuts for some creations. Origami is an art form that can be practiced by both children and adults. Projects can be large or small, decorative or practical. One cruise line even makes origami towel animals for its guests. There are also paper toys you can make with origami.

The Monkey and the Mountain

Fold your origami paper in half on the diagonal, corner to corner. Unfold it and fold it on the opposite diagonal. Unfold it again.

Turn the paper over. Fold the paper in half, top to bottom and then side to side. Unfold. When you have completed this should see eight triangles creased into the paper.

Holding the paper so that is in a diamond versus a square shape, bend the top corner to the bottom corner. Do not crease it.

Hold the two corners in one hand. Push the corners that are sticking out to the side into the center so that they fold in upon themselves. Flatten it. You should have a small diamond now.

Cut the top the diamond off. This should be the folded end, not the open end. This is the monkey. If you prefer, you can tear the monkey off instead, the lines just will not be smooth and even that way. Put the monkey aside for the time being.

Turn up the corner that is open. Bend it about halfway between the bottom corner and the side corners. Crease it into place.

Insert the monkey in between the two triangles that are exposed when you bent up the corner in the last step. Pull the exposed corners together as if you were milking a cow. The monkey will climb up the mountain and fall out the top.

Use a rectangular piece of paper. Fold it in half length wise and unfold. Fold it in half width wise and leave it folded.

Hold the paper so that the opening is pointing down. Fold the top two corners in to the center fold.

Fold the top layer up and crease it. Repeat on the backside. With on hand on the top right and one on the bottom left, pull the side out to make a flat diamond.

Fold the diamond in half on the front and back, bringing the open bottom up to the closed top corner. Pull the sides out again, like you did in Step 3.

Pull the outer layer downward to create the bottom and crease it. Pull apart the sides to open it.
