How to Obtain Federal Tax ID for Estate
You can obtain a federal tax identification number for an estate in just a few minutes on the IRS' website, irs.giv. The actual number you will need is called an Employer Identification Number, or EIN. While the name doesn't directly pertain to the estate, EIN number is what is necessary to file taxes on the deceased's estate.

Visit the following link by copying it and pasting it into your Internet Web browser:

Read the information regarding EIN applications and then click "Begin Application."
Make sure you have enough time to complete the entire application. The application process should take about 10 minutes. You cannot save the application for later use, so setting aside enough time to complete the entire application is critical.

Choose "Estate" on the next page.
Fill in the marker to the left of the word "estate" and then click "continue" at the bottom of the page. On the next page, read carefully the description of what constitutes an estate, then hit "continue" again.

Input the deceased's information.
You will need the deceased full name, and full Social Security number (SSN) or tax ID number (TIN). Continue to input all required information until the end of the application is reached.

Retrieve the newly issued estate EIN.
Upon completion of the application, the IRS will automatically issue the estate an EIN number for taxation purposes. The EIN is effective immediately and can be used as soon as it is issued.

Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. EST
Saturday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST
Sunday, 7 p.m. to midnight EST
Do not let the application sit dormant for more than f15 or the website will log you out and you will have to restart the application process.
