How to Connect Motorcycle Electronic Accessories

There are several ways to connect motorcycle accessories. The location used to connect such accessories depends on the type and amperage demand for the item being installed. Most motorcycles have provisions for adding accessories. It is important to connect accessories to switched circuits so they will not run the battery down when the engine is off. The total amps must be known before you connect the accessory to the electrical system. The amperage within the system should not exceed the fuse amperage when the item is added to the total.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the accessory securely in its proper place. Plan the route for the wires for not only aesthetics, but for safe routing to the point of connection.

    • 2

Refer to the instructional manual for the accessory for the information on wattage and amperage draw.

    • 3

Connect marker lights or a radio to a 20-amp fused circuit. If the owner's manual for the bike is not available, there is a placard near the fuse box that states what circuits the fuses operate. Most bikes have two wire connectors under the seat designed to operate lights (additional lights for aesthetics) or a radio, which are both low-amperage items. These are not designed to operate headlights or running lights.

Connect all ground wires directly to the frame or engine. Cover the ground connections with liquid electrical tape to protect the connections from the elements. Test the accessory to make sure it works properly. If not, check the wiring connections to make sure the accessory is plugged into the proper circuit and that the ground is securely grounded (no dirt, paint or other substance blocking the ground wire from touching the metal).
