How to Calculate the Crime Rate
Most cities release a yearly crime rate for different crime types, such as robbery, assault and sexual crimes. These rates display the percentage of individuals out of the entire city community who had this sort of crime committed against them. If, your city does not annually release these numbers or have them published in the paper, you can calculate the crime rates yourself.

1
Go to your local city hall. Here the city and/or county records are kept and are of public use, so they are free to access. Ask the clerk at the city hall for a copy of the previous years crime records (amount of times each crime occurred) and a copy of the last census taken of the city.

2
Divide the amount a particular crime is committed by the total population for the city. So if the crime of assault was committed 4,000 times in a city of 120,000, you divide 4,000 by 120,000. The answer comes up to be about .03 (or 3%). This means about three percent of the city population was assaulted during the year.

Repeat this division process for each crime rate you want to come up with.
