How to Make Infant Rice Cereal

The road to eating solid foods begins when a child is 4 months old. Gradually, more solids are introduced and the baby is slowly weaned off of formula or breast milk. Many people choose to begin with infant rice cereal when starting their babies on solid foods. Although there are commercial infant rice cereals that you can buy in the supermarket, making your own infant rice cereal is more affordable and healthy. You can choose the grains that you want to use, and it won't be overly processed. Making your own rice cereal is a relatively easy process that takes only minutes to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Put 1/4 cup of rice into a coffee grinder. You can choose any type of rice you want. Some mothers prefer white rice, others prefer brown, and still others prefer a mixture of the two.

    • 2

Grind the rice for 30 seconds. It should be flaky or powdery in consistency at this point. If it isn't, grind it for a little longer.

    • 3

Heat one cup of water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. You can substitute with breast milk or formula if you desire.

    • 4

Add your rice mixture to the water and stir with a spoon.

    • 5

Bring the heat down to a simmer and let the mixture cook for another 10 minutes, while whisking.

    • 6

Add pureed fruits or vegetables to give the cereal some flavor and added nutrients.

    • 7

Let the cereal cool off and serve it to your little one while it is still warm.
