How to Sign Up for a Citizenship Test

The Citizenship Test, also known as the Naturalization Test, is a requirement to become a legal citizen of the United States through naturalization. The test demonstrates the applicant's knowledge of U.S. history and their ability to read, write and speak basic English. Before you can sign up for a test, you will need to complete a few tasks.

      Complete and submit a N-400 form, which is the Application for Naturalization. You can download the form through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. You will need to pay a fee to process your application by money order, cashier's check or personal check. You may mail your application in or drop it off at a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services facility.

      After you send in your application and processing fee, be fingerprinted at a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services facility.

      After your fingerprints are submitted, you will be asked to set up an interview time by an officer at your local U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services facility. At the interview, you will be given the Citizenship Test, which covers civics and your ability to read, write and speak English.

      If you do not pass the test, you will be given the opportunity to take the same version of the test again at a later date. If you do pass, you can continue the steps to become a U.S. citizen.
