Things You'll Need:
- a computer with a new, clean Ubuntu operating system
-
Step 1
Download the Opera browser (or another web browser) for Ubuntu from the Opera website as a complement to the Mozilla Firefox browser that comes with Ubuntu. Having more than one browser option can be helpful when an Internet surfing challenge develops.
-
Step 2
Obtain Skype for Linux from Skype's online webpages. Skype makes a nice addition to other software that may come with your version, such as Ekiga Softphone, Pidgin Internet Messenger, and Empathy Instant Messenger.
-
Step 3
Download Ubuntu restricted extras, Sun Java, Adobe Reader, additional fonts (like MS), and Adobe Flash from the Software Center (or Add/Remove section) of your Applications Menu. This will make your computing experience much smoother when browsing websites and reading documents.
-
Step 4
Download Dropbox for Linux from the web. Dropbox will enable you to store copies of your files for back-up. This would be an additional storage space if your version comes with the Ubuntu One client.
-
Step 5
After testing hardware and software with your new Ubuntu install, download any additional Ubuntu compatible proprietary drivers you may need from the Internet or Ubuntu software sources.
-
Step 6
Download additional media players such as VLC and MPlayer to go with your Rhythmbox from the Ubuntu software store. Add Picasa for Linux as an additional photo viewer to F-Spot from Google's website.
-
Step 7
Add your location to the Edit section of Tasks and Appointments in the upper right hand corner of your screen. This will allow you to receive weather information for your area. Consider downloading Weatherbug for Linux as a backup weather application.
-
Step 8
Add the GUFW Firewall (or another firewall) graphical user interface to work with the UFW Firewall that comes with Ubuntu. Although Ubuntu is generally virus free, you may want to consider downloading a free anti-virus program such as Avast! Linux Home Edition for added peace of mind.
-
Step 9
Configure your email client (like Evolution) to meet your emailing needs. GMail lovers may want to download the GMail notifier from the Software Center in the Applications Menu.
-
Step 10
Change your background themes, screen saver, Art Manager, and other eye candy to maximize visual appeal for Ubuntu. Consider downloading widgets, docks, and additional windows managers to help you pimp your desktop experience. Visit the Appearance and Display Sections under System/Preferences to make additional adjustments. The AWN Dock, Gnome Do with Docky, Art Manager, and the Compiz Fusion Settings Manager (and Icon) are popular choices available for direct download from the repositories in Ubuntu.
-
Step 11
Browse Synaptic Package Manager and the Software Center in Ubuntu for additional software program applications and ideas on how to pimp a new Ubuntu installation.
