Otodecetes cynaotis, commonly known as ear mites, is a problem that many pet owners face. Most dogs and cats are carriers of ear mites, and will develop a problem at some point. As the mites feed on earwax, the canal may become irritated and a bacterial infection can set up. Black, crusty wax in the ear and on the flaps is a good sign that your pet is suffering from ear mites.

Instructions

    • 1
      Wax/Exudate

Remove all of the black, crusty wax (Exudate) on the inside and outside of the ear.

    • 2
      Dish Liquid

Mix a solution of warm water and dish soap. Only use a small amount of soap to barely make it suds.

    • 3
      Ear Bulb

Use the ear bulb, that can be bought at a local drug store, to insert the mixture into the pets ear. Gently squeeze the bulb not to injure the ear drum.

      Mite

Allow the water to run out of the ear. This should clean all of the exudate, black wax, from the inside of the ear. Do not use Q-tips since they can actually pack the wax deeper into the ear.

Insert your ear mite medicine, that can be bought at your vets office or local supply store, into the ear after it is completely cleaned. Follow the directions on the label, and clean the pets ear if you see anymore black.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean the ear before inserting the medicine.

  • See your vet if the infection does not clear up after using the medicine.
