Sometimes the drain in a kitchen sink will get a grease clog. Hot or warm grease going into a cold drain pipe will solidify and cause a grease plug stopping the water in your sink from draining. This happens frequently when cooking with oil or making high fat content foods such as bacon. To clear the drain you do not need to call a plumber or run out to the store to buy a harsh chemical product to dissolve the grease. Chemical drain cleaners are expensive, this is a cheap alternative that works just as well. This is actually a very easy way to clear the grease clog with some products you probably already have in your house.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

  1. 1

Remove as much water as possible from your sink. Use a cup or small pot to bail the water out of the sink into a bucket or large pot. Sop up excess water with an old dish rag when the water becomes too low to bail out of the sink.

  2. 2

Pour ½ of a cup of table salt into the drain. Allow the salt to sit for a minute or 2.

  3. 3

Pour 1 can of cola into your drain. Any type of cola can be used, diet or regular. Allow to work for a minute or 2. be sure the cola is not flat.

  4. 4

Pour 1 cup of very hot water or boiling water into your drain. Your drain will be free of the grease clog.
