How to Get a Drivers License Without Getting a Permit

Typically, when attempting to obtain your driving license you take several classes of drivers education when you are 16, and upon completion you receive a driving permit that allows you to drive the car as long as a licensed driver is present in the vehicle. However, this does not necessarily need to be how you go about obtaining your license and it is possible to bypass all of the permits and classes.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until you are 18. Once you are 18 you can take all of the driving tests without actually going through drivers education and receiving a permit.

    • 2

Go to your local DMV office and sign up for both the written and driving portions of the exam. These take place on different days and at different locations.

    • 3

Complete the written exam. The proctor grades your test at your completion so you know how you fared when walking out the door.

    • 4

Take your driving test. Although it may vary depending on your state and location, you typically are going to be graded on three main driving areas: city, highway and parking.

    • 5

Take the forms stating you passed both tests into the DMV and you are issued a drivers license. The license, typically, is mailed to you within a few weeks of submitting the paperwork.
