How to Start a Space Heater
A space heater can make a room warm and cozy. However, space heaters have a reputation for being somewhat dangerous. If you're starting your space heater for the first time of the season, it's a good idea to review safety measures and to ensure that you have a working smoke detector in your house. Check your smoke detector to ensure it is working. Change the batteries in your smoke detector if it has been more than six months since they have been changed.

Read the instructions that came with your space heater.

Set up your space heater at least three feet from bedding, clothing, curtains and other items that are combustible. Do not set up the space heater in bathrooms, basements or other areas where it might come in contact with water.

Set up the space heater in a room where you can monitor children and pets.

Check the cord on the space heater to ensure it is not frayed, worn or broken.

Plug the space heater directly into an outlet on a circuit that is not carrying a heavy load. Do not use an extension cord.

Adjust the thermostat on the space heater.
