How to Emboss With Brass Stencils

Embossing with brass stencils, also called "dry embossing," is an easy way to add texture and interest to your scrapbooking and paper crafting projects. Dry embossing produces a raised image on cardstock or paper for your layout or card.

Things You'll Need

  • Lightbox
  • Cardstock or paper
  • Wax paper
  • Brass embossing template
  • Stylus, dual-ended

Instructions

  1. Embossing

    • 1

      Place brass template on lit lightbox. Place cardstock or paper on top of brass template, face-down.

    • 2

      Rub wax paper over the back of cardstock or paper.

    • 3

      Press stylus into template recesses, starting along edges and pressing toward center. Begin pressing with large stylus end, moving to smaller end in smaller areas.

Tips & Warnings

  • Press gently into recesses as to not tear the paper.

  • Remember to place your stencil facing the opposite direction as desired, as paper is upside-down.

  • Dark-colored papers may be difficult to see through to the stencil. Consider using a dark paper with a white core if necessary.
