How to Set Drills for Volleyball

Setting drills for volleyball will ensure a smoother team practice. Drills will improve certain basic skills by repetitive action. For some drills, all that is needed are a volleyball and players. For other drills, extra equipment such as cones or a whistle might be needed. According to the strength and power for volleyball website, there are three categories in which drills are categorized. The first category is specific to skill and movement. The second focuses on strategy, tactics and systematics. The third category focuses on volleyball conditioning.

Instructions

  1. How To Set Everything Up

    • 1

Set up the volleyball net. Make sure that it is at the right height before the team gets started with drills.

    • 2

Make sure to get all the volleyballs out. You will need more than one, so use the extras you have on hand. Just have them in the ball carrier ready for you when you need them.

    • 3

If you are using cones or other equipment, be sure to set those up before so that you are able to explain to your players what types of drills they will be doing.

    • 4

Before each drill begins, be sure to gather your team around. You can give specific instructions as to what drill they are about to do. This eliminates confusion and can help in the success of setting drills.

    • 5

During the drill, be sure to have your whistle handy in case you need to transition into something else or to stop the drill for a moment. This will make it clear as to what is actually going on. It always is easier to hear the sharp shrill of a whistle rather than someone yelling.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a passing drill, set up two cones (about 10 feet apart). Have one player step in between the cones. Toss a ball to the player and have her pass the ball to where the setter's spot is. After the player passes the ball, have her shuffle behind the first cone and come around to the middle again. Toss another ball to her just as she approaches the middle. The player should then shuffle behind the other cone and back to the middle. Continue this figure eight while tossing balls to the player as she approaches the middle. The player should constantly be moving. Add rewards or punishments during the drills. For example, toss a ball in between two players. If neither goes for it, make both do 10 push-ups. If one gets it, have her go to the end of the line for another round.

  • Change up the drill process every now and then. If the players get bored with doing the same drills all the time, they will get bored with the sport.
