How to Take Antihistamines With Milk

Antihistamines are used to treat allergy and cold symptoms. The antihistamines help to block a substance called histamines, produced by the body when suffering from an allergy or a cold. Antihistamines, taken on a regular basis, can irritate the stomach lining. A simple remedy to help avoid this problem is to take the antihistamine with milk, which helps coat and protect the stomach.

Instructions

1. Measure out the proper dosage of antihistamines. Antihistamines should be taken only as directed by your doctor or according to the manufacturer's directions on the label. A normal dosage of regular, short-acting antihistamines is 1 to 2 tablets or teaspoons every four to six hours for adults and children older than age 12. Children 6 to 12 years old should take only 1 tablet or 1 tsp. every four hours. Consult your doctor about dosages for children younger than age 6.

2. Fill a glass with 4 to 6 oz. milk. Use only whole or 2 percent milk if possible because they contain more fat, which will help protect the stomach from irritation.

3. Place the antihistamines in your mouth and swallow them while drinking the milk. Continue drinking the milk until it is gone. If taking a liquid antihistamine, drink the antihistamine first and then drink an entire glass of milk.
