Gluing tissue paper to a wall and then painting it or glazing it creates a textured look. You can use plain white tissue paper and then paint or glaze it, or mix and match different colors of paper for a casual room. This wall treatment is especially hard to remove if you're not satisfied with how it turns out, or if you decide to redo your walls in the future. Consider using this effect in a powder room or a small section of wall before tackling a larger project.
Things You'll Need
- Tissue paper
- Spray adhesive
- Paint roller
- Small paintbrush
Paint or prime the walls if you have any concern about the existing color of the walls showing through the tissue paper.
Tear the edges off a sheet of tissue paper and then crumple it up. Open it and lay it flat.
Spray a section of wall with spray adhesive. Press the tissue paper into place and smooth it out, leaving a few creases or wrinkles. Make sure all of the paper is stuck to the wall.
Continue crumpling paper and applying it to the wall with spray adhesive. Overlap the edges and step back from your work occasionally to make sure you're creating the effect you want.
Check to make sure the wall is completely covered when you've finished. Cover blank spaces with small pieces of tissue.
Use a roller to paint the tissue paper. Watch out for drips which happen around the creases and wipe them smooth with a small paintbrush.
Tips & Warnings
- The tissue paper treatment will be easier to remove in the future if you apply it to wallpaper liner that has been pasted to the walls.
- If you choose to add colored glaze to the paper, apply the glaze with a chip brush and then use rags to work the glaze in.
