1
Be aware of any musty or unusual smells in the house. Mold often has a strong, mildewy odor.
-
2
Check everywhere for mold around the house. Mold can grow on just about any item or surface. Check for mold on floors, walls, pipes, furniture, carpets, paper products and rugs. Mold.com says, "Mold may appear cottony, velvety, granular or leathery and come in any shade or color.''

Be aware if anyone in your house develops breathing problems. Airborne spores can make it hard to breathe.

Look to see if anyone develops symptoms of mold poisoning. Mold can produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If a person is exposed to VOCs, mold poisoning can occur. Symptoms of mold poisoning include respiratory problems, coughing, nausea, dizziness and headaches.

Tips & Warnings
Be aware if you only smell moldy odors when the heating or air-conditioning units are running. It's possible mold growth has formed in these systems. If someone has trouble breathing in your house, ask if those symptoms are also present when they are not in your home.
When inspecting for mold, wear eye goggles, a surgical mask and rubber gloves.
