Protecting yourself and your child from sexual attacks is one of the most important things that you can do. You need to be vigilant, and one of the ways to do this is to know where the sex offenders in your town reside. In Illinois, this information is easily available online from the State of Illinois. 1
Go to the website which lists sex offenders in Illinois. A link to it can be found in the resources section.
-
2
Read the preliminary information because it warns you that you are not allowed to harass or stalk a sex offender. It is against the law and might also be dangerous. The last thing that you want to do is to let your emotions get the best of you and lead you into trouble. Other legal warnings are given, for example, that the information given does not predict what the sex offender will do in the future.

-
3
Click on the button noting that you have read the warnings. This will bring you to the search page, where a number of different search options are available. The one most useful is "Mapping." Click on that word, in the far left margin.
-
4
Type in your street address and your zip code and then click on "Submit." Get ready for an eye-opening experience, because the next screen that you see will be a map of your neighborhood, with the sex offender locations marked by little circles. Your residence will be marked by a blue star in the middle of the screen. Schools are symbolized by little red buildings.
-
5
Pick one of the circles and hold the pointer over it. The address and name of the offender will pop up on the screen.
-
6
Click on the circle. You will now see the offender's picture, how old he or she was at the time of the offense, what the crime was, and how old the victim was.
-
7
Click on the Illinois Department of Corrections link if you want to follow up and find more information, but for now you at least know where he resides and you can make sure that your child does not walk without supervision in that area.
-
8
Think about showing your child the picture of the offender. This depends on your child's personality and age and how likely it is that the child will encounter this offender.
