1
Open your door and remove the screws holding the latch plate in place. Just above the latch plate, you'll see another plate around the dead bolt. Remove these screws as well, then take both plates off the door.
-
2
Close the door and examine the lock from inside the home. Kwikset locks have a set screw near the lever or knob that holds the lock in place. Remove this screw and pull the backside of the lock off the door.

3
Examine the front of the door and check the base at the bottom of the handle. You'll see another screw here that is holding the handle in place. Remove this screw and take the handle and any remaining trim off the door. On the interior side of the door, there will be a plug that was hiding the fastener at the base of the handle. After you've removed the handle, this plug can be removed by hand.
-
4
Take the screws out of the dead bolt trim on the interior side of the door. Grasp both sides of the dead bolt and slowly pull them away from the door.
-
5
Measure the thickness of your door. It will likely measure 1 3/8 or 1 3/4 inches. Keep this number in mind when choosing your lock, and make sure to find a lock designed to fit your door.
-
6
Determine the backset of your lock. Measure from the edge of your door to the center of the bore hole (where the handle was installed). This dimension is the backset, and will typically range from 2 3/8 to 2 3/4 inches. You'll need to choose a lock with the same backset to fit the existing holes and preps in your door.
-
7
Buy your new Kwikset lock. Make sure to choose a unit that will fit your door in terms of thickness and backset. All Kwikset handleset house locks that share these same measurements will fit into your existing door. You can choose a lock with the same design as your old one, or find a new design that you like better.
-
8
Insert the latch into the middle hole in your door and fasten the latch plate in place. Insert the dead bolt in the top hole and add the latch plate for this device as well. Use the screws that are included with your lock to fasten these plates in place.
-
9
Place the ring cylinder around the dead bolt and insert the exterior trim into the top hole in your door. Line up the cylinder tail and connecting bars to attach the interior trim, then screw the dead bolt to the door using the fasteners provided.
-
10
Install the handleset trim through the front of the door. Line up the connecting rods to attach the interior trim, then screw these units in place. Add a screw to the bottom of the handle, making sure that the head of this screw is installed on the exterior side of the door. Add the plug or screw cover to the interior side of the door to cover up this screw.
