How to Use a Slicer
Slicers are very handy tools if you like thin, uniform slices of things. What you choose to cut with your slicer will, of course, be partially dictated by what the manufacturer says your slicer can cut. However, most slicers can cut a variety of meats, cheeses, breads and even vegetables with ease. Whether manually or electrically operated, your slicer can improve your kitchen's efficiency--not to mention food aesthetics. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Block of non-soft cheese
- Slicer
- Whole cured, boneless ham
- Cucumber
- 4 1/2-gallon zip-top bags
- Waxed paper (optional)
Instructions

1
Pick up your cheese block. Adjust the settings on your slicer to determine what thickness you'd like your slices to be. If you're unsure that you picked the right setting due to not having used your slicer before, you can readjust this later to your liking.
-
2
Use the food pusher that should be attached to your slicer to hold the cheese wedge in place. Never use just your hand for this job, especially as you get closer to the end of whatever it is you're cutting. Slicers are fast and convenient, but they'll cut your hand as easily as they'll cut that cheese. If you're using a manual slicer, proceed to Step 3. If you're using an electric slicer, proceed to Step 4.

Crank the handle on your slicer around to activate the blade. Push the food carrier toward the blade, making sure to use the food pusher. Your cut pieces should fall neatly into the tray below the blade as you cut them. If you like, you can place a piece of waxed paper on this tray to catch the slices, like you've seen at your local deli.

Push the start button to activate the blade on your slicer. Push the food carrier toward the blade, making sure to use the food pusher. Each slice will neatly drop into the tray underneath the blade and food carrier as you cut it. Use a piece of waxed paper to catch these slices if you like.

5
Clean each piece of the slicer thoroughly after use or between types of ingredients. Consult your owner's manual for instructions on how the slicer can be taken apart for easy cleaning.

6
Repeat with ham and cucumber. Combine resulting beautifully cut items to create an antipasto platter, or save for sandwiches.

Tips & Warnings
Proper hygiene is very important when using a slicer. Always make sure all parts are thoroughly clean both before and after use, especially if you're not the only person using that slicer. Not only will this aid in prolonging the overall life of your slicer, but it will help prevent food borne illnesses as well.
Always heed the manufacturer's specific safety instructions for your model of slicer. Food pushers serve the same purpose they do for food processors: keeping your hands away from sharp blades. If you lose your food pusher, purchase a new one before making another slice.
