Plan and Prep

1
Determine what toys need to be stored and what toys need to go. Honestly assess what you have and give away unused and duplicate toys to a child who could use them. Recycle or dispose of broken items.
-
2
Purchase unfinished cubbies from a local unfinished furniture or arts and crafts store. This toy storage configuration requires five unfinished cubbies: four two-cube units and one three-cube unit. The cubbies are typically 30-by-15 inches for the two-cube units and 45-by-15 inches for the three-cube units.

3
Determine what color the toy storage will be. Use white or black paint to keep the look neutral. However, don't be afraid to go bright (blue, red, pink) to match your child's décor. Buy a quart of satin or semi-gloss paint as well as a quart of primer if you chose white paint.
-
4
Buy wicker and fabric baskets and decorative tins to put on the storage shelves.
Put It All Together
-
5
Lightly sand the wooden cubbies, and gently wipe away residue.
-
6
Apply two coats of primer (if you are using white paint) with a paintbrush, and allow it to dry according to the primer's instructions. Apply two coats of paint, allowing one to two hours of dry time in between coats.
-
7
Configure the toy storage by stacking two two-cube cubbies horizontally on top of each other next to the vertical three-cube unit. Stack the remaining two two-cube cubbies horizontally on top of each other on the other side of the three-cube unit. Consider drilling a hole through the backs of the top level cubbies and using a screw to attach them to the wall for safety.

8
Place baskets, bins and tins in each of the toy storage unit's cubes. Store the toys so they are organized by function: cars, crafts, Legos, dolls, puzzles, pretend play, CDs/DVDs. Use the top of the unit to stack games and toys that don't fit into the cubes.
