Purchase a waterproof cast and bandage protector to put over your cast when you are showering or near water. If you are going to wear your cast for a long period of time or aren't able to avoid water, a cast protector can be a good investment. Several online companies sell large hard plastic cast protectors that fit over your cast and can be worn while in the shower or around water. Your doctor also may be able to provide a cast protector when you originally get your cast.

Wrap your cast in a plastic trash bag when showering. Use a rubber band to secure the bag at the top to ensure no water gets inside. Try to avoid using your cast hand in the shower, and keep it out of the water spray as much as possible.
