Traditionally, window cornices are made from wood, but many people lack the tools or skill necessary to build wooden cornices. Instructions

    • 1

Measure the top of your window for the length needed for the cornice. Be sure to take into account blinds or curtain rods in your measurement, if they will be located behind the cornice. Determine how far from the wall you need your cornice to extend. Make sure you leave enough room for blinds or curtain rods in your measurement.

Cut a long block of foam into the lengths needed for the front of the cornice and the 2 side pieces. Place a straight edge along the cutting line and use a utility knife or other sharp cutting implement to cut the foam.

    • 3

Run a zigzag glue line on one of the end pieces and press it against the front length of the cornice. Hold the foam in position, pressing firmly against the two pieces for at least 30 seconds for the glue to set. Make sure you use glue that is suitable for use on foam. A craft or hardware store will have the best selection of glue. Repeat the process for the other end piece.

Wrap your chosen fabric around the cornice and glue the fabric in place. Use mini-clamps or paper clips to hold the fabric in place while it dries. Add other embellishments, such as ribbon or tassels after the fabric is firmly attached to the foam cornice.

Nail a 2 inch framing nail into each side of the window where the cornice will hang. Press the cornice onto the nails to hold it in place.
