How to Use a Blue Bulb Syringe

Blue bulb syringes are commonly used to remove mucus from a baby's nostrils. Because a baby does not yet know how to remove such obstructions on her own, a blue bulb syringe allows the parent to do it for her. The baby might fuss a bit at first, but using a bulb syringe on an infant is safe and painless, and your baby will feel more comfortable afterward. Be sure to clean the syringe well after each use.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the syringe so your index finger and middle finger are resting on either side of the nozzle, at the base where it connects to the bulb. Position your thumb behind the bulb so the pad of your thumb is resting flat against it. If this is uncomfortable, you can simply hold the bulb with your fingers.

    • 2

Squeeze air in and out of the bulb a few times to get the feel of it.

    • 3

Squeeze the bulb and then insert the tip into your baby's nostril about 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

    • 4

Let go of the bulb; this creates suction that will remove mucus or any liquid obstruction.

    • 5

Remove the syringe and wipe it on tissues before each new suction attempt.

    • 6

When you are finished, squeeze the bulb to empty it.

    • 7

Wash it in hot, soapy water by repeatedly sucking in and expelling the water. Dry it well and store in a clean, dry place.
