How to Remodel Kitchen Islands
Kitchen islands add countertop work space for kitchens, serve as informal dining areas, and create a gathering spot in one of the most popular rooms in the house. Remodeling an outdated kitchen island makes the area as beautiful as it is functional. Consider the uses of the island when deciding what changes to make to the area. If your budget doesn't allow a complete kitchen makeover, a remodel of the kitchen island provides a small change that can perk up the entire room. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Clean all surfaces of the kitchen island using a mild detergent mixed with water. Remove any grime, grease, and dirt from the island to prepare the surfaces for remodeling.
-
2
Identify the aspects of the kitchen island that need to be updated. Determine if the structure is solid and large enough for your needs. Assess the wood finish, countertop, storage, and lighting above the island.

3
Sand the wood surfaces of the island to prepare it for refinishing. If you plan to stain the island, use chemical strippers to remove the old stain. Always follow the directions on the stripper's packaging.
-
4
Apply the new stain or paint to the wood surfaces of the kitchen island. If you paint the wood, apply a coat of primer and allow it to dry. Apply two thin layers of the paint color, allowing each to dry fully. For staining, follow the directions on the product for a good finish.

5
Replace or polish the countertop on the island. Granite, tile, Corian, and silestone surfaces are common materials for countertops.
-
6
Replace the light fixture above the island. If there isn't currently a light above the island, consider adding one for task lighting. Choose a light fixture that blends well with the rest of the kitchen and provides a good source of light for working at the island.
-
7
Add any other decorative elements to the kitchen island according to the project plan. These elements might include decorative edging, trim, door knobs, or countertop displays.
