1
Mark the deck for stair placement; the markings should be at least 36 inches apart. Then determine the dimensions of the stairs to the ground, then divide this number by 6 or 7, this should be the amount of stairs needed.
-
2
Place markers at the top of the stairs and at the bottom, then each step in between. This gives you a visual of the area you have to work in.

Take a sheet of paper and write down all measurements. Then, draw a two-dimensional graph on a blueprint. The graph will start with a square area marking the edges of the stairs both front and back use an inch for each foot. Once you have the square drawn add each stair on the diagram, adding the front and top of the step to the paper, you can use a small rectangle for the front then a larger one for the top.

4
Now that you know the exact measurements, you can take images of the materials for stairs laying them out along the diagram. Make sure to layer one area over the other to give a more detailed look.

If you decide to use rock or marble and are adding a base to the stairs, be sure to allow room for any concrete poured. If using wood leave enough room for the handrails and runs to hold the stairs in place.
