How to Troubleshoot Jeep Cherokee Electrical Problems

The Jeep Cherokee's electrical system is responsible for providing power to all of the electrical components in the vehicle. The most common problems with the Cherokee's system are in the charging system and the fuse panel. Before replacing any electrical component, make sure you troubleshoot the electrical system first.

• Voltmeter

Instructions

1. Set the dial on the voltmeter to "volts."

2. Touch the red lead on the voltmeter to the power terminal on the battery.

3. Touch the black lead to the negative terminal on the battery.

4. Check the readout on the voltmeter. The readout should be 12.6 volts. If it is below this voltage, the battery is drained. If it is below 12.3 volts, the battery is dead. You'll need to change the battery or have it recharged.

5. Open the fuse panel underneath the Cherokee's steering wheel. Turn the release knob on the panel and pull the panel straight down to remove the cover. Use the fuse puller inside the fuse box to remove and inspect every fuse on the panel. Make sure that the metal strip inside the fuse is not burnt or damaged in any way. Replace any broken or burnt fuses with another fuse of the same amperage.

6. Check the exposed electrical wiring underneath the hood of the vehicle. Any damaged or frayed wiring must be replaced by a professional mechanic.
