How to Remove an Element in a Whirlpool Dishwasher
The Whirlpool dishwasher uses an exposed heating element in the bottom of the dishwasher to dry the dishes as well as heat the water. The element is held in place from the bottom of the dishwasher. Disconnect the power supply to the Whirlpool dishwasher. Most dishwashers are hard wired into the home. To disconnect power, turn the dishwasher circuit breaker off inside the home electrical panel.

Open the Whirlpool dishwasher door. Remove the lower dish rack by pulling it straight out of the dishwasher. Make a mental note of where the heating element end terminals go into the bottom of the dishwasher tub. Close the dishwasher door.

Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the two screws at the top of the access panel. The access panel is directly under the door and covers the toe panel. Remove the two screws between the access panel and the toe panel with the screwdriver.

Pull the access panel and toe panel away from the bottom of the Whirlpool dishwasher. Locate the wires connected to the terminal ends of the heating element. Use needle nose pliers to pull the wire leads off of the heating element terminals. Be sure that you pull the wire from the metal leads. Pulling the wire anywhere other than the leads could result in a broken wire.

Remove the two barrel nuts that secure the heating element to the bottom of the Whirlpool dishwasher with a wrench.

Open the dishwasher door and carefully pull up on the terminal ends of the heating element. Unsnap the heating element from the retaining clips inside the dishwasher. Do not remove the retaining clips from the dishwasher. Pull the Whirlpool dishwasher heating element out of the dishwasher.

Tips & Warnings
When installing the new element make sure that the rubber contact point between the element and the dishwasher tub seals firmly. If the rubber contact point does not seal tight you will have water leaks.
