How to Remove Pine Tar From a Bat

Pine tar is a sticky substance that baseball players use to improve their grip on a baseball bat. It is still used throughout professional baseball, but its peak of popularity was during the 1980s. Pine tar is a dark, glue-like substance that keeps the bat from slipping out of a hitter's hands. However, it can be quite messy.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove excess pine tar with a warm, wet rag. This will keep the pine tar from getting too high on the bat when it is first applied. It will not get the pine tar off the bat completely. However, it will keep it from spreading.

    • 2

Use rubbing alcohol on a rag to get pine tar off the bat. This will take firm pressure and could take 10 minutes or longer depending on how much pine tar was used. The alcohol must be used in a one-way stroke toward the knob of the bat. Don't go back and forth in an attempt to get the pine tar off the bat.

Rub a rag soaked in warm water and on the area that you just rubbed with rubbing alcohol to get all the alcohol off the bat. The alcohol will soften the wood if remnants of it are not removed. The warm water will get the alcohol off. Then take a rag and dry the bat completely.

Take a rolling pin to smooth out the rough spots on your bat. Rub the rolling pin from the large end of the bat down to the handle. This will help get the bat close to its original condition once the pine tar has been taken off by the rubbing alcohol.
