How to Core Drill Concrete
A core drill bores holes through concrete using a core drill bit. Core drill bits are a hollow cylinder with square teeth along the bottom edge and an enclosed top that attaches to a threaded stud located on the core drill. Due to the larger size of core drill bits, you need to secure the core drill to the concrete you are drilling. While operating the core drill, you add water to the core drill bit either with a hand pressurized water pump attached to the core drill or manually with a spray nozzle. Does this Spark an idea?

- Core drill
- Core drill bit sized for the hole you require in the concrete
- Pencil
- Safety glasses
- Hammer drill
- Masonry bit for embed anchors
- Embed anchors
- Bolts
- Ratchet
- Socket set
- Hand pressurized water tank
- Concrete patch

Spin the core drill bit clockwise to attach it to the cored drill. Hand-tighten the core drill bit. The bit will lock into place while you are drilling.

Align the core drill bit with the area where you need the hole. If you are drilling through a wall, enlist the help of a friend to hold the core drill in place.

Mark the mounting locations on the base of the core drill with the pencil. Move the core drill to a location that will allow you room to work.

Insert the masonry bit into the hammer drill.

Don your safety glasses.

Drill a hole into the concrete at each mounting location you marked in step three.

Follow the instructions to install the embed anchor into the holes that you drilled in the concrete in the previous step.

Place the core drill back into position. Thread one bolt into each imbed anchor you installed in the previous step.

Tighten the bolts with the ratchet and appropriately sized socket to secure the core drill.

Attach the water tank to the core drill if equipped; or pressurize the water tank by pumping the handle located on the top of the water tank.

Start the core drill. Apply pressure to the core drill bit by turning the core drill handle toward the concrete.

Keep pumping the handle of the water tank to allow a steady stream of water into the core drill bit.

Remove the bolts from the embed anchors and move the core drill.

Tilt the core drill backward to remove the concrete core from the core bit.

Place concrete patch over the embed anchors to cover the holes in the concrete.
