How to Create Your Own Wall Decal
Wall decals are becoming prominent in modern design. Especially popular with renters and people who change their decor often, these extra-large stickers allow you to make decorative statements that are completely removable and don't alter the existing walls. They come in thousands of designs and colors, ranging from large-scale flowers to scripture quotes. Unfortunately, they can also come with a hefty price tag. Luckily, it's easy to make your own wall decals with common household items. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Take a rough measurement of your wall to use as a reference for designing your decal. Sketch out a rough idea for your design on scrap paper, including approximate measurements. Note what parts of your decal image are what colors for later reference.

2
Roll out your contact paper on a flat surface, face down. Draw out your decal design pieces in pencil on the gridded backing. Remember that your decal will go up on the wall in the opposite direction of your drawing, so what you draw on the left will appear on the right. Pay attention to negative space areas to incorporate your wall color into your decal. Use stencils if you're not confident in your drawing abilities. Outline the final design with black permanent marker to make it easier to cut out.

3
Cut out your decal pieces using scissors or a craft knife. Create clean, smooth edges as you cut. Lay out your design one piece at a time as you cut it out.

4
Clean and dry the surface of the wall where you will place your hanging to help it stick. Begin placing the decals on the wall without removing the backing by attaching them with masking tape. This will help you adjust your decal's placement and get it just right before you apply it to the wall. Make adjustments as necessary. Make light pencil marks at the places where major pieces go to help guide your installation.

5
Peel the backing from your decal pieces one at a time, and press them firmly to the wall. Use a credit card to smooth out air bubbles and help the adhesive create a sufficient seal. Use a damp cloth to wipe away any visible pencil marks.
