How to Create Digital Waves in Photoshop

      Open Photoshop. Go to "File" in the main menu and select "New". In the pop-up settings box, enter "400 pixels" in the "Width" field and "300 pixels" in the "Height" field. Click the "Background Contents" drop-down list and select "White". Click "OK".

      Select the "Brush Tool" in the "Tools" palette. Click the "Brush" drop-down list in the tool settings located at the top of Photoshop. Select the "Hard Mechanical 13 pixels" brush. Click the "Set Foreground Color" swatch in the "Tools" palette and select the color you want for your digital waves. Click "OK".

      Hold the "Shift" key down and draw a horizontal line straight across the center of your canvas. The "Shift" key keeps the line perfectly straight.

      Go to "Filter" in the main menu. Navigate to "Distort" and select "Wave". In the "Wavelength" section, enter "20" in the "Max." field. In the "Amplitude" section, enter "20" in the "Max." field. Click the "Randomize" button several times until you see the wave shape you want. Click "OK".

      Go to the "Layers" palette and click the "Create a New Layer" button located at the bottom of the window. Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4, making sure to click the "Randomize" button several times in the filter.

      Make sure that "Layer 1" is selected in the "Layers" palette. Select the "Move Tool" in the "Tools" palette and move the second wave layer around on the canvas until the two waves line up against one another in the way that you want.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can easily layer text or other images on top of your waves to create a more complex design. Changing the color of the second wave can also add depth and contrast to your digital wave image.
