Mardi Gras is a celebration in February known for its parades, parties and outrageous costumes. During Mardi Gras, it's completely acceptable to be dressed head to toe in beads, feathers and sequins, and the more creative a costume, the better. Masks, capes, hats and jester costumes are standard, and it's even more fun when you design your own. Does this Spark an idea?

How to Design Mardi Gras Costumes

1
Take a trip to an arts and crafts store for supplies. The color of sequins and feathers is up to you, but keep in mind the holiday's traditional colors are purple, yellow and green, and those are the colors of ribbon you'll need. Buy the widest ribbon available, about one-inch wide.

When it comes to Mardi Gras, accessories make the costume, and the mask is the most important. Glue sequins over the entire mask, and don't leave any part uncovered. Then, glue the ends of the feathers onto the mask, so they point outward. This will make your mask more extravagant and appear bigger. Set it aside to dry.

The top hat is dull now, but you're going to make it more exciting with green, yellow and purple stripes. Measure the circumference of the hat (not the brim). Cut pieces of ribbon the length of the circumference, and glue them around entire crown of the top hat, up to the top. Alternate between each color. Cover the brim of the hat with sequins. Set it aside to dry.

You have the most important part of your costume, but still need something to wear. Go to a thrift store and ask to be directed toward their discounted clothing, often called a "junk pile" or "dollar bin." From here, there are no real rules, but try to stick to the green-yellow-purple color theme. Once you find an outfit you're comfortable with, put it on with your hat and mask, and you're ready to go.

Tips & Warnings
Bead necklaces are an important tradition in Mardi Gras wear, but they're easier to find during Mardi Gras celebrations, when people throw them around, so don't worry about having them beforehand.
