Make a trip to the hardware store before you begin. Assuming your rocking chair is waiting at home, you just need to buy a paintbrush, paint, sandpaper and furniture sealer. You can buy acrylic paint or house paint. If the scene you want to paint calls for many colors, acrylic paint is probably best because you can buy smaller amounts, often in kits with various colors. There are different types of sandpaper, but 10 ply will work the best. You can buy matte or shiny furniture sealer, but choose the finish that matches your rocking chair. If the chair is shiny, buy a shiny furniture sealer.

Start by sanding down the part of the rocking chair you want to paint. A beach scene would look best on the top of the chair, where someone would lay his head when reclining. Rub that part of the chair thoroughly with the 10-ply sandpaper. Dust away any residue.

Choose the beach scene you want to paint. Sailboats, waves, palm trees and sunsets will all look good on your rocking chair. Pick an image and paint it onto the part of the chair you sanded. If you're not comfortable painting freehand, use stencils to create your design. Let the paint dry for at least four hours.

Apply the sealer. With a paintbrush, paint the sealer over the beach painting. The sandpaper made the chair look dull, but the sealer will seal your painting in and make the surface look shiny (or matte) again to match the rest of the chair.

Wait an hour to let the sealer dry and your rocking chair will ready for the beach!
