How to Calculate Elementary Grade-Point Average

A grade-point average (GPA) is the average numerical grade a student has earned for each class he has taken. An elementary school GPA differs from a high school or college GPA because in high school and college, each class is assigned a number of credits depending on its difficulty, which means some classes count for more of your GPA than others. In elementary school, each class counts equally. You can determine your elementary school GPA by doing some arithmetic.

Yearly GPA

  • Assign a number to each letter grade. Use 4 for A, 3 for B, 2 for C, 1 for D, and 0 for F.

  • Go through your transcripts and write down the number of A's, B's, C's, D's and F's you received.

  • Assign a number for each grade by following the scale in Step 1.

  • Add the numbers.

  • Add up the total number of classes you took.

  • Divide the number you got when you added your grade numbers together by the total number of classes you took. That's your GPA for the year.
